Western Lake (Dinner)

This place ALWAYS seems to have a lineup out the door whenever I pass it. Whether that’s a good thing, because the quality is spectacular, or just out of sheer convenience, we’ll find out lol.

First off, we have what I call the “Cold Plate”. It consists of Beef Tongue, Jelly Pork, Jellyfish, Roast Pork, and Shrimp. The beef tongue was somewhat marinated, though could have been a tad more. The jelly pork was super bland..but whatever I guess, usually seems to be lol. The jellyfish had a REALLY strong kick to it, like wowzers..burned my mouth off. The roast pork was very lean and well seasoned, while the shrimp, although being very spicy, lacked any real flavour besides the copious amount of chili oil used.

Next off, we have the crab balls (and a small straggler of a shrimp lol, my bad). The crab balls had a very nice light batter on the outside, while still staying crispy, and maintaining a moist texture and a solid definitive crab taste on the inside (although the vinegar was present, don’t think it was really needed!)

Here we have the mixed vegetables dish with scallops, chicken, peas and celery. Overall, I didn’t taste anything but MSG MSG, and more MSG. It was WAY too overloaded with it, as your mouth went numb upon contact with the food.

A staple of these kinds kinds of banquets is the soup. I’m not sure what you’d call it anymore because it’s not really “Shark Fin” per se, which I’d avoid like the plague due to ethical reasons, nor is it fish maw. But anyways, taxonomy aside, it tasted VERY much thickened with flour and also possessed a strong MSG aftertaste.

Another cornerstone of Chinese banquets is the Crab and/or Lobster dish (this one’s just lobster). I really liked the creamy sauce they drenched the meat in, though, again, it had WAY too much MSG.

image

Next off, we have mushrooms, pea tips, and abalone. The pea tips were nicely cooked as they were crunchy but not to the point it was extremely effortful to chew. The rest of the dish, again, for like the billionth time lol, too much MSG. I think for quite a few of these dishes, they use a similar kind of sauce

Yum, Squab! It was quite oily but damn you know what? It was so crispy and juicy..almost forgot about how much acne it’d give me xD

"I’ve got my eye on you…."

My favourite dish (aside from dessert)! It’s fried chicken, though Chinese style, so super oily, like the squab, though still crispy. The shrimp chips were nice and crispy (nice change since most are usually oily to the point of mush). The chicken was VERY crispy and juicy, I applaud them on that! It was my favourite dish of the evening, as previously noted :)

Next on the list was this rather odd fried rice with this consomme like sauce on top. It was..very creamy and interesting to say the least. The sauce made it so soft, you could pretty much just gum this dish like baby food lol.

image

Yum, Yee-Mein (super fried, and then re-fried, noodles). Unfortunately, they went a little skimpy on the sauce on this one..so it was pretty bland.

image

Scallop fried rice, so many restaurants feature it, so many mess it up. This one was actually okay! Although most of it was pretty tasteless, the dried scallop REALLY made the dish! The preserved-salty taste of it contrasted well with the…uhh nothingness(?) of the rest xD

For the first dessert (yes there were multiple), we had the tapioca dish with the crusty layer on top. The crust itself had a flavour reminiscent of an almond cookie while the tapioca had a very uniform consistency and lightly sweet flavour to it.

image

Lastly, we have what I call ass buns (it’s rosy red, and when you squish it, the brown filling comes out HAR HAR HAR HAR). Unfortunately, this one had the green lotus seed filling..and I can tell you right now, it was a little on the scarce side (bland).

Good:

-Constantly changing plates (attentive service)

-Some of the dishes executed well

Bad:

-There’s WAY too much MSG in their stuff

-Ass buns man…disappointed

Closing Comments: I’m generally not one for these kinds of banquets, but when I do, the chicken and ass buns, if present, are what I see as the common measure lol. They’re a bit heavy handed on MSG here unfortunately.

On a passing note, I want to remind you not to forget to use your Sanitory Napkin xD
